Just look at this gentle giant. Two year old Saxo was unhappy in the refuge at Cahors where he wasn’t standing up for himself and was getting picked on so it was decided he would be happier here at Poorpaws. He is ! A Brittany Spaniel / Pyreneen Mountain Dog (I think !), Saxo is gorgeous. A large fenced in garden would be best with regular long walks. He is very affectionate, fine with other dogs and not bad with cats. He is chipped, vaccinated and castrated.

Digby
Remember poor Benji ? Tied up 24/7 and walked with a weight round his neck to stop him pulling on the lead ? Well here he is in his new lovely home. Oh, and his name is now Digby, although it should be Riley the life he is now leading !!!!
Wellsley
Just to prove that here at Poorpaws we produce ‘la crème de la crème’, here you see Wellsley, one of Lizzie’s pups, helping her owner with the cryptic clue Times crossword, or perhaps discussing the political situation in outer Mongolia !
Puppies
PUPPIES !! It’s that time of year again. Here we have an Australian Shepherd who is four months old. All together now…………………..Ahhhhhh !
Mimi
Nuff said!
Annie and Geordie
Annie and her pups were in the SPA and in great danger when we got the call. Regulars to the site will know that Brittany Spaniels are my favourite so obviously we had to get her out of there. Sadly only one pup survived, Annie being a great protectrice of her pups but lacking in maternal instinct ! I would take little Geordie out of the kennel at night to stop him being suffocated too. Now he is one month old and can stand up for himself very well. We think Annie is about 5 years old, a very faithful, loving dog, she adores long walks and doesn’t run off. A bit lively with cats. We have no idea who Geordie’s dad is, but he has certainly sired a beauty ! Both will be looking for new homes around March.
Titi
Little Titi (sorry, not my choice of name !) is a lovely 3 year old Yorkshire Terrier (ok, he’s having a bad hair day!). Chipped, chopped, toilet trained and vaccinated Titi is up for adoption as his owner is very ill and cannot cope with him because he is a “terrorist and hates cats” !! Oh yeah ? Well we have seen nothing of that. Very timid when he first arrived, within an hour he was following me around like a shadow. He has been left alone in the bedroom for a couple of hours and I came back expecting to find the room in ruins. Not a bit of it, he was sleeping peacefully in his bed – well, to be truthful, on our bed, but not a sign of any damage. As for the cats, well there are many here and most are bigger than Titi so he soon gave up the idea of running after them and even when he tried he stopped immediately when I called him. He is very obedient and is great in the car.
All in all, a delightful little chap.
Febuary 2011
February already and we are having some wonderful, wonderful weather, really makes one believe that Spring will actually arrive. (Sorry if it’s not the same where you are !)
‘Adoptions are doing quite well, Danielle’s girls and puppies have gone to new homes and after being at Poorpaws for several months Fulham has immediately followed his brother, going to a new home very soon. Coincidentally, also to camping car fanatics! Luckily Fulham doesn’t seem to have the car sickness problem that Fuller had.
Great news that Poppy the spaniel has been found. The poor thing had been living rough and was very happy to get back to comfort and love.
Our next Barn Book Sale will be on Easter Saturday at the same barn venue in Beliben (just down the road from Sauzet in the Lot). So, can I ask you to start reading as fast as you can and let us know if you have books to donate. Please come along on the day to buy your summer reading and enjoy tea, coffee and delicious cakes – none made by me, promise
We also would love audio books, dvd’s and cd’s, but no videos, sorry, they just don’t sell.
Thank you to those who have enquired about my wrist ! The pins are out thank goodness, it was getting very ‘ouch’ as they had started to travel up the back of my hand ! It’s now down to physio in order to be able to go back to work in March. Shame, I enjoy being at home and spending more time with the dogs.
Now, take a look at the adoptions page, there are some real sweeties, oh, and if any of you know the English guy who just dropped his dog off at the SPA Carcassonne on his way to the airport to leave to live back in the UK, WITHOUT leaving the agreed donation, me and ‘de boyz’ would like to get in touch with him in a “hands round the neck” sort of way.
Evie
Remember Evie, the little pup found in Cahors ? It was third time lucky for her when the fist two adoptions didn’t workout and here she is very happily posing – and licking her lips – with other members of the happy Hutt clan.
Diouk
Remember Diouk -(now Woody) ? He was on the website for such a long time and we were desperately trying to get him out of the ‘no hopers’ bin at Figeac. Well a lovely girl called Rachael took matters into her own hands, went down there, got him out and as soon as he was officially hers, found a wonderful home for him. A real kleenex, sniff, sniff ending !
Moss
Moss is a beautiful short haired border collie just under five years old. Housetrained, chipped, vaccinated and neutered. Poor Moss had a long unhappy time at the SPA in Carcassonne until a short time ago when a lovely English couple adopted him. Very sadly ill health has forced the couple to ask for another home to be found for him as they cannot now give him the life he deserves. Moss is obedient, does not stray, is fine with other dogs but sadly not good with cats. It would be a tragedy if this beauty found himself again behind bars (and I would fear for the health of the voluntary help at the SPA who did so much to get Moss out of there!). Let’s get Moss to a new home asap. He is at the moment at Montaigu de Quercy in the Tarn and Garonne and his present owners would be only too glad to hear from you, just call me for their number.
Fuller
After several months at Poorpaws, Fuller’s day has finally been made ! He has gone to a very nice couple where he ticked all the boxes – except one. Pizza yawns in the car !! However, his new owners have not given up and there is improvement. Just as well as Fuller’s new life is to include a lot of swanning around in a camping car ! Deep breaths Fuller, you’ll get over it – I did !!
Elfie
After a long wait Elfie has found doggie heaven – or will do when his new owner gets back from a home visit to Norway. It was obviously love at first sight on both sides and we just now Elfie is in for a great life. He deserves it after a rotten start in life. Bursting with affection Elfie will now have his own very special someones to love.
Frannie and Ellie
Little devil Frannie and Ellie (who was adopted so quickly she hardly had time to turn round let alone get on to the website !) have gone to a great home where Ellie has turned into an obedient shadow and Frannie……………well Frannie is just Frannie !!
Wilbur
Large timid Wilbur is obviously very much at home with his new friends – and has turned out not to be so timid ! He has settled well with his new patient owners and just has to get over his fear of the car. But I suppose that when living rough he only saw cars as danger. Latest news is that there is improvement and we really appreciate his owners for working with him on this.
Teddy
Long term regulars to the website may remember Teddy a rough-haired terrier who was so depressed at Carcassonne that he had stopped jumping up when people visited and had given up hope. He came to Poorpaws and I can’t say he was snapped up immediately but was definitely happier and proved to be a lovely dog. Well, the wait was worth it, just look at our boy now (he’s the one without the glasses ).
I can honestly say that tissues were needed when I visited and saw how happy and loved he is. Good for you Teddy!
Fulham
Remember Fulham, brother of Fuller ? Here he is at last adopted and obviously very happy and, like his brother, enjoying camping car travel. Worth waiting for eh Fulham ?!
Filly
After a couple of disappointments and health worries Filly has settled into her great new home with lovely couple who were anxious to take her even if there were health problems. Happily Filly is now very well and proving to be a very intelligent adorable dog who has the ability to charm everyone who meets her. A real Poorpaws star !
Poppy – Lost Cocker Spaniel
URGENT!!!!! HAVE YOU SEEN THIS DOG?
She is a small frame black and white Cocker (pedigree), 7 years old – we bought her in France (Le Boulou, Languedoc Roussillon in 2003 and she has a tattoo – French -no.2EDV254 she was micro chipped in Spain (as we lived there in 2003) Microchip no. 724098100713370 (Virbac back Home).
She was lost in the Betracq area which is 64350 (Pyrenees Atlantiques) just on the border with depts. 65 (Hautes Pyrenees) and 32(Gers).
The children have built a facebook page for her.
January 2011
2011 and Poorpaws is up and running into the New Year !
We hope you all had an enjoyable festive season and that 2011 will be good to you. Thank you very much to all of you who sent us good wishes and thanks especially to the ex Poorpaws who sent their pocket money to buy treats for the less lucky dogs, you really are a super bunch !
Well that’s enough about you – how about me ……….?! It was very kind of many of you to enquire after my broken wrist. I can report that it’s a real bummer !! You don’t realise how many things you need two hands for – luckily one of them is washing up ! I go back to hospital on the 14th to have an operation to have the pins taken out and I was praying for another overnight stay but apparently I’ll be out in the afternoon ! Hopefully I’ll be able to go back to work quickly but as I work as a chambermaid / waitress it may be another month. One-handed hotel workers are not much in demand !
So that’s enough about me too, lets talk dogs. You will see that beautiful Pumpkin has found happiness, so has Filly (sniff, sniff) and Frannie is due to go to her new owner next week – God help him !! All the others are keeping their paws crossed.
Don’t worry if you don’t live nearby, transport can be arranged where necessary.
More from me next month when, hopefully, I’ll be back to typing with both hands !
Bracken
Remember Bracken ? A beautiful Brittany Spaniel who found himself homeless after “it’s me or the dog” marital squabble. (Personally there would have been no contest had it been me – the dog would have won hands – or paws – down !) Anyhow, Bracken struck gold and went to a fabulous home where his new owners invest a great deal of time in him, introducing him to agility which he adores. Here he is with his trophies and we are delighted to report that he has a lovely new adopted sister who is following in his pawsteps !
Pumpkin
A lovely family came to see Babouchka but for some reason she was in Ice Queen mood and blew her chances. Enter Pumpkin who came out of the park like a bullet out of a gun with “TAKE ME, TAKE ME” written across her lovely soppy face ! It worked and she is now in a lovely home playing with Lucy and Megan – when she hasn’t got her head in the bird food drum or dustbin !
Mia And Xena
Below you will find details of the dogs we have for adoption. These are mainly with Danielle at La Mere aux Betes in Castelnau Montratier, but contact me for more details. Adoption fee is 180 euros, dogs will be chipped, vaccinated, wormed and had flea treatment before adoption and if the dog is not sterilised we can get this done for you at a more reasonable price.
If you do not see a dog who appeals to you, get in touch anyway as we have new dogs coming in regularly and they may not yet be on the website, 45% of residents in the UK are pet owners , it is your turn to be part of that percentage. I can also direct you to other associations who may have just what you want.
UPDATE: Please note that a very generous Poorpaws supporter has offered to take financial responsibilty for Mia and Xena should there be anyone able to give them a happy home.
Due to very sad circumstances Xena and Mia find themselves desperately looking for a new home or homes as their owner can no longer care for them. I hasten to add that this is not a situation where English are going home leaving unpassported dogs. Their owner is French and is someone who has done an enormous amount for abandoned dogs herself and for whom I have great respect. Life has dealt her a really shitty backhander and the worry about her dogs is exacerbating the situation.
Xena is a shepherdX/Griffon, three years old, chipped, vaccinated and sterilised. A gentle , submissive dog who gets on with everyone Xena is obedient and loves to be close to people.
Mia, possibly a Beaceron of about 5 years has known bad treatment in her past but hold no grudges. A shy lady she reacts well to kindness and gentility. Totally without any aggression Mia is fine with cats and dogs.
Obviously the ideal would be for the girls to stay together but can be separated if necessary. If you can help in any way you can contact the owner on 0565647441 if you speak French, if not contact us. I would really like to help here.
Ronnie
Ronnie (Barker !!) was a right ragamuffin when he arrived at Carcassonne but he ‘scrubbed up well’ and was adopted shortly after arriving at Poorpaws. Sadly that didn’t work out (Ronnie didn’t like sharing with his new Westie brother – silly boy Ronnie !) so back he came and was soon travelling up to a lovely lady where he now has all four paws under the table and lives the life of Riley.
Dexter
Dexter was losing heart at Carcassonne so we brought him to Poorpaws where he was very quickly adopted by some lovely Dutch ladies. Here he is with his new pal Piniouf and they have great times together.
Coco
Coco is a gorgeous lass who’s owners had to return to UK but couldn’t take Coco (grrrrrr from Sue !). However, Coco was adopted by some lovely guys and here she is looking very happy with one of her new masters.
Tigger
Remember Stig the beautiful abandoned Pyreneean MountainX ? Stig is now Tigger and has proved to be the gentle giant we knew he would be. Now he is in a wonderful home and is so happy he even sent some of his pocket money to buy treats for Poorpaws who have not been so fortunate. Thanks Tigger !
Tigger has even appeared in an advertisment for a particular dog toy !!! A real darling who hasn’t let stardom go to his head !
Lizzie’s Pups
Here we have Wellesley and Flocon two of Lizzie’s unexpected pups who look as though they’ve really fallen on hard times ……………….!!
Darcey
Here you see a very comfy Darcey ! After a long time in a concrete kennel at the SPA Carcassonne where he shared the affection that the wonderful people there give with 100 other dogs, Darcey came to Poorpaws where he settled very quickly. He has now found his own personal paradise in the Limousin where all the love and affection is for him alone. Be happy Darcey, you deserve it !
New Website
Welcome to the new PoorPaws website, we hope you like it. Sue’s monthly update now has its own section under the PoorPaws News tab at the top of the page.
Fly And Frannie
Well Fly and Frannie have both got their Christmas wishes! Fly is already enjoying her new home and Frannie has her bags packed ready to go in January. Thank you to all who made this possible.
Fly (spaniel/border collie) and Frannie (little white terrier type cross) said that all they wanted for Christmas were loving homes ! Each at only just two months old both are vaccinated and chipped. Fly was found by the side of the road way away from anywhere and Frannie is the last of an unwanted litter of six – all others have been homed. Fly will be medium sized and Frannie we think will stay quite small as mum is small, dad unknown!
December 2010
Regular visitors to this website will notice little changes to the set up. This is because my friend Joke (pronounced Yoca) is off on her travels so friend Colin is taking over. Thank you soooooooo much Joke for all your hard work over the years and prepare yourself Colin for taking on a computer ignoramus !!
So there I was, dear reader, lying on the operating table just about to go under the anesthetic when the nurse whipped the oxygen mask off my face and asked if I had a Berenese Mountain dog !! Honestly, I promise you !
Danielle’s Girls
These lovely six month old girls were chased from village to village before luckily ending up being taken to my friend Danielle who is an voluntary SPA cruelty inspector. Danielle investigates cruelty cases, does kenneling, education and rehoming. Dogs homed by her usually know their P’s and Q’s !! These pups have proved very receptive to loving care and education and are ready to go to new homes. If you speak French you can call Danielle on 0565219450 ,or, if not, call me.
Danielle’s Pups
All these pups (found in a cardboard box) are also with Danielle and all need good homes as soon as possible !”
Babouchka
Babouchka is a Mangrove Shepherd, (whatever that is !). At four years old she is a darling and missing very much her pal Cabouche who was homed last week. They had been together for ever and we are just so hoping that Babouchka will find the same happiness.”
Note. Babouchka is now at Poorpaws after getting seriously depressed after she was separated from Cabouche. She has perked up and play happily with the other dogs. She is a real darling, very affectionate and ADORES travelling in the car where she will happily sit and sleep for hours.
Fuller And Fulham
These little bundles of fun are Fuller (because we had never seen a fuller tum after a couple of days here !) and Fulham (no reason, just running out of ‘F’ names !!). They are now just three months old and are doing very well after there sad start in life of being dumped in a cardboard box. They are full of beans and will be of average size – as far as we can tell !!
Buzz
Buzz is in Carcassonne – Delivery can be arranged
Buzz is a gorgeous chap, 4 years old, chipped and vaccinated, fine with other dogs, Buzz’s only problem I that he is black and, sadly, black dogs are more difficult to home. A lovely friendly sociable boy, doesn’t he deserve a chance ?
Berger
Berger is in Carcassonne – Delivery can be arranged
Wow, just look at this beauty !!! A Merle-Sheepdog languishing hopefully at Carcassonne SPA. At five years old, he is friendly with other dogs, calm and good on the lead. Lets get him outta there !
